#notmyRPO – Postponement of the decision in the Senate on 10.07.2019

Over 100 students were at our #notmyRPO demo on Wednesday. Afterwards was the Senate meeting, which was attended by around 40 students. This was successful in our eyes. The RPO was not voted on, but discussed objectively and constructively for two hours.
The following arguments were put forward in the discussion in the Senate:
- Reduction of the current 60 additional CP to 30 CP:
This change was also rejected by some of the non-student
Senate members present. President Spoun also
spoke out against the cut. From the outset, we have campaigned
for the 60 additional CPs to be retained, as this regulation could jeopardize
possible Master’s degree eligibility, among other things.
In addition,
the cutcontradictsthe interdisciplinary concept of the university mission statement.
- Possible compulsory attendance in seminars with up to 30 participants:
This change was discussed in great detail at , even though the majority of the professors present did not take part in the discussion. We have the impression that the professors view an optional attendance requirement positively. The professors want to achieve higher participation in seminars by making attendance compulsory. We are very critical of this regulation, as it restricts self-determined study and disadvantages some groups of the student body (e.g. people with chronic illnesses, working people)
- Postponement of the second exam phase:
The second examination phase is to be postponed to the examination phase of the following semester. We see many disadvantages in this change. For example, we would have to study one semester longer if we don’t pass the exam in the last semester. The lecturers argued that there was not enough time to correct the exams.
- Postponement of registration and deregistration deadlines:
The deregistration deadline is to be extended by five working days (previously five days, in future ten days). The registration deadline is to be shortened by two weeks (previously 15.05. / 15.11., in future 30.04. / 31.10.). We find these postponements questionable. The previous flexibility in the planning of examinations will be severely restricted. The argument put forward by the lecturers was to strengthen the students’ “commitment” to group work or similar. With the current regulation, the administrative staff have a lot of work, which is why the non-student members of the Senate spoke out in favor of extending the deregistration deadline .
After two hours, the agenda item was closed and the common will for a discursive process of rapprochement and finding solutions was expressed. The discussion will now be dealt with again in the Central Study Commission (ZSK). We are hoping for a constructive and positive outcome in the ZSK.
We would like to thank all the helpers and everyone who protested with us. We couldn’t have made it this far without you. Of course we will keep you up to date.
