On 08.07, from 3 pm, it’s time again and the campus becomes a festival site!
At the AStA Sommeropenair, there will be a wonderful lineup in addition to cool stands, delicious food and cool drinks:
We are very pleased to welcome GIRLWOMAN as our first act at 17:45.
Das große Ganze
The debut album by GIRLWOMAN will be released by Staatsakt on 05.11.2021. It is entitled “Das große Ganze” and contains 11 songs from the infinite expanses of pop-all between indie, electronic and future soul. 11 chapters of a grand narrative with the knowledge that everything is in there, and yet it can’t be everything.
“Das große Ganze is a declaration of love to the beauty of things against the backdrop of my life,” says GIRLWOMAN about her album, which she recorded and produced together with musician and producer Rasmus Exner in her apartment in Bielefeld over the course of the last three years.
Her first single “Rote Riesen schlafen nicht” was released back in May 2020.
A somnambulistic rave track that attracted attention far beyond the borders of the East Westphalian city. A pulsating song with an inimitable voice that irritatingly wanders between childlike charm and adult expression.
GIRLWOMAN doesn’t believe in the abrupt end of childhood with the entry into adulthood anyway. In everyday life anyway, in a life full of appointments and supposedly rational decisions, emotional glaciation and fear, we unfortunately all too often repress the child in us and prefer to lose ourselves in hair-splitting, vulgo: adult discussions with ourselves and others – until we end up with the “Tick Tack Trauma”. Another great, pre-released song from GIRLWOMAN.
“Das große Ganze”, on the other hand, begins with a rather dreamy view through a “prism”. A club track. Dancing people in the fog and laser light come to mind when listening to it. Although the song is actually more about loneliness. Of strange, hallucinogenic light reflections as you wander around the city jungle at night in deserted alleyways between glass and concrete. GIRLWOMAN sings: “Your skin tastes like cement”. What a beautiful, fairytale-like description of a building façade. In general, it is always the physical bodies and structures that captivate GIRLWOMAN in her song lyrics: “My head is a picture book with a huge collection of snapshots. I’m looking for a home in the things themselves!”, says the artist about the inspiration behind her musical imagery: “Electricity, line, form, I feel somehow lost!”, she says elsewhere in the song “Electricity, line, form”, in which she replaces an entire string orchestra with a violin and a viola in endless tracks recorded one after the other in her home studio. In addition, a drum computer and analog synthesizers. How big just two people and their machines can sound today from a small apartment in Bielefeld: Fantastic!
Incidentally, the album was mixed by French Grammy award-winner Veronica Ferraro, with whom an artistic friendship developed last year.
She has added a little stardust to the big picture.
When we ask GIRLWOMAN about her musical preferences, she mentions the Dirty Projectors, Anohni or Moderat just as naturally as Herman Van Veen or Friedrich Lichtenstein. She also enjoys listening to the Berlin pianist Lambert. The song “Ab morgen ist alles anders” was written together with him.
GIRLWOMAN didn’t miss the opportunity to design the illustrations for the cover artwork herself. In the vinyl edition, there are 8 different motifs printed on cardboard. In contrast to the formatted digital world, the record cover serves here as a kind of passe-partout. Inserted into it are illustrations drawn from the music. Sometimes monochrome, sometimes colorful. Clear lines and perspectives, repeatedly intersected by GIRLWOMAN’s phantasms. The high art of abstraction. Easy as pie. Big pop!
Even though part of this production took place during the Corona period, GIRLWOMAN attaches great importance to the fact that “Das große Ganze” has not become a Corona album. It is nothing more and nothing less than: The big picture!

At 20:00 the band TEMMIS will play and revive new-wave!
Edwin Rosen, Borninmay or Steintor Herrenchor – anyone who observes the German music scene closely has certainly noticed a new, emerging trend for some time now. The “Neue Neue Deutsche Welle”, as some have been calling it since the term first appeared in connection with Edwin Rosen. Others simply see it as a musical déjà vu to the 80s. But however you label and measure it, the fact is: the post-punk and new wave era is well on its way to experiencing a new heyday and is currently presenting its latest offspring: the Tübingen band TEMMIS.
Winner of the Hifi Klubben Bandkontest
Just a year ago, Roman, Tizi, Alex and Emil from the Baden-Württemberg student town of Tübingen had neither released any songs nor really planned to make it big as a band. They simply enjoyed making live music – and therefore never turned down an opportunity to do just that. So when the offer came to support their friends Lummerland on tour, the answer was clear pretty quickly.
But the six weeks of touring quickly changed the band’s mindset. More and more song sketches were written, demos were recorded and slowly but surely the decision was made to give it a serious try. This is where the HiFi Klubben #amplified band contest for newcomers came into play, in which TEMMIS prevailed against 150 bands and won the studio recording of an EP – the first professional releases by the four, who had previously only made a name for themselves with demos.
And voilà, here they are, less than a year after the band was founded, presenting their debut EP “Wenn du da bist”, consisting of three intense guitar-based post-punk songs with techno influences. It’s always something special when a band writes lyrics in German, and so the tracks by TEMMIS are given an extra dose of magic with simple but apt German lyrics. What they have also never forgotten in the studio recordings is their untamed passion for the live stage, the energy of which can be felt in every track on the EP.
Retro vibes and restlessness
The EP’s title track “Wenn du da bist” (When you’re there) convinces from the very first second. It takes its listeners on a journey back to the 80s, but mixes the new wave sound with pounding techno à la Kev Koko. TEMMIS then tops off this atmospheric mixture with catchy lyrics. The tracks deal with love and being overwhelmed by it, restlessness and restlessness in relation to one’s own life. These themes are also reflected on a musical level through fast, danceable beats and supernatural synths.
The EP encourages you to dance and yet makes your heart heavy with melancholy due to the underlying emotionality in the vocals and sound. In their songs, TEMMIS give the unique feeling of looking into the soul of their listeners and catching them in their musical arms – exactly what we all need from time to time. And now that the musicians from Tübingen have tasted blood, there’s a good chance that we’ll be hearing a lot more from the four of them this year – both on the live stage and in the studio.

Last but not least: At 21:15: futurebae
Very few people manage to retain their own diversity and still create an unmistakable recognition value – futurebae, on the other hand, has been part of this select group for some time. She almost naturally combines electronic 80s influences, spherical trap sounds and R&B to create an aesthetic soundscape – summery dancefloor vibes and pop earworms not only invite you to dance, but also to feel. Lukewarm nights, great love and even untouchable freedom seem close enough to touch as soon as futurebae take to the stage.
It wasn’t until 2020 that the young musician suddenly appeared on the scene of the German music scene: “Coca Cabana” is the name of the single in collaboration with the experimental German rapper Dissy, whose club sound has now generated over a million views. The Berlin-based artist steps out of the shadows
into the light and impresses from day one. Her debut EP “K.T.U.L.E.S.” was released in October 2020. – The zeitgeisty newcomer demonstrates “No dates and easy to sit down” with a charming wink.
With her unmistakable vocal color and collaborations with producer Tilmann Jarmer or the 80s indie pop trio Tropikel Ldt., futurebae quickly becomes one of the most exciting new releases that German pop music has produced in 2020. A flair for unmistakable styling and an ear for catchy electronic hits that hit the mark one after the other – futurebae’s appearance quickly develops into a recipe for success. In summer 2021, she plays her first gigs, including at the popular Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg and in Giessen at the Stadt ohne Meer festival initiated by the band OK Kid. Whether live or with
new single releases in 2021 – futurebae takes on a genre-flexible role in the German-language music landscape that fans and critics have been eagerly looking for.
Isolated by the pandemic and at the same time still caught up in the creative process of her first release, the new EP “Willst du mit mir gehen?” was created last year and released in April 2022 via Universal subsidiary VIRGIN Music Label & Artist Services (formerly Caroline). Once again working side by side with producer Tilmann Jarmer , the album features six songs, all of which accompany the mental processes of a young woman searching for her place in the world between love life, self-empowerment and increasing responsibility for her own life. futurebae is accompanied on her musical journey by fellow musician Tom Thaler and the duo Hans and Hans. The only feature part of the EP is also thanks to the Hamburg band Schorl3. In this community, futurebae makes the decision on “Willst du mit mir gehen?” not to let the emotional fire go out (“Fieber”) and at the same time to finally tackle the struggle with her own emotional world (“Sowas wie ja”, “Summer Love”) – and at the end of the day realizes that it’s more than okay to simply be “everywhere & nowhere”. “Willst du mit mir gehen?” shows futurebae from a personal and approachable side, which at the same time creates a space for identification for an entire generation.
“This EP is like my own coming-of-age movie. It’s a bit about love
but also about finding out that you should stay true to yourself instead of conforming to
others. It’s okay not to be perfect and it’s also okay to be a little
lost. Being caught in the middle is sometimes annoying, but it can also be
nice not to know where the journey is going.”
– futurebae about their EP “Will you go with me?”
The single “Comme Ci Comme Ca” captures perhaps the most important moment in the self-empowerment of a proud woman: “I realized long ago that I’m not like you, your image is ruined, put a heart on it – I love you” sings futurebae to a relaxed beat. In the style of a personal mantra, she not only manifests her
own independence from social expectations, she also practices serious acceptance towards the very people who are critical of this independence. Staying true to yourself when you have to put up with yourself for the rest of your life seems to be the most sensible decision for your own empowerment – even if you just have to give other people the middle finger.
And of course, growing up doesn’t just involve coming to terms with yourself, but also with your own desires. “Deine Haut” is the soundtrack for the moment in the club when the spotlights are dimmed and the last ray of light only falls on that one person who becomes the object of erotic fantasy. Sex positivity and self-determined femininity meet erotic fantasies:: “You’re all I need, so undress me, so please drag me out into the frenzy,” futurebae purrs into her listener:s ear, while the slow, bass-heavy instrumental makes the sexually heated atmosphere not only palpable but also audible.
