As the LZ reported today(https://www.landeszeitung.de/blog/lokales/2584985-spoun-will-lueneburg-verlassen), Sascha Spoun wants to leave our university and become President of the University of Göttingen. He was only elected for a new term of office here in January. At the time, we as the student body strongly criticized the procedure and the appointment. We are now irritated by Spoun’s sudden change of heart, but look forward to the future with excitement and concrete expectations for a possible replacement.

As a student body, we spoke out in January in favor of a public advertisement for the office , which did not take place. We are very surprised that Mr. Spoun is shirking the responsibility entrusted to him just six months after his democratically questionable re-election. These latest developments are particularly surprising in light of the fact that in January, a new election including a tender was presented as too costly and bypassed.

In the event of new elections, we as the student body demand to be much more involved in the process and that this office also reflects the social reality , so that the University of Lüneburg finally has a female president* . We are looking forward to the process, as the accents of different candidates can initiate a debate about the future of the university . In this way, we can also voice our demands for a more democratic university, where management and marketing processes no longer dominate in the future, but where the university fulfills its social responsibility and focuses on current problems such as the climate crisis, the political shift to the right and hostility towards science.

On Thursday, the Senate of Georg-August-Universität Göttingen will make a decision. If Sascha Spoun is elected President, his term of office is expected to begin on January 1, 2020.
