The next academic elections will take place on June 18, 19 and 20, 2024.
In the academic elections, you elect the members of the university self-administration. These are the member of the Faculty Council of your faculty and the three student members of the Senate.
The student members of the committees are elected every year. The members of the other status groups (professors, academic staff and technical and administrative staff) are elected every two years.
What is the Senate?
The Senate is the highest decision-making body of the university. It has 19 members (10 professors and 3 each of students, WiMis and MTV). All important matters that affect the entire university are decided here. These include, for example, changes to the framework examination regulations or the appointment of new professors.
You elect the three student members from the nominations. They have equal rights with the other members of the Senate and can also submit motions and vote.
The Senate also elects the Executive Board, members of the higher-level Examination Board and many other higher-level offices and committees.
What are faculty councils?
Each faculty has a faculty council; there are therefore 5 faculty councils at our university. The Faculty Council is the highest decision-making body of a faculty. This is where, for example, the major and minor courses offered by the respective faculty are decided and the Dean’s Office is elected.
Students are represented on the Faculty Council with one seat and therefore also have equal rights with WiMis and MTV.
Students can also have a central say on the Faculty Council, influence decisions and advocate for their own issues.
Why should you go to the polls?
As students, we are the largest status group at the university with around 9,000 people. Unfortunately, we only have a minority position in all committees and can influence decisions with a great deal of commitment and effort. It is therefore all the more important that a large number of eligible voters legitimize our members and that our student representatives have the voting weight of the broad student body.
How can you get yourself elected?
Would you like to work on a directly elected committee yourself? Then you have the opportunity to submit an election proposal to the Academic Election Office. All documents and deadlines can be found on the following university intranet page: https://www.leuphana.de/intranet/gremien/hochschulwahlen.html
Alternatively, you can also be elected by one of the committees to a study commission, an examination board or many other thematic commissions and committees. The best way to do this is to contact the student members of the faculty councils or the student senators directly
If you have any questions, you can contact the AStA’s university policy department by email at any time or ask the office team to forward you to the appropriate person:
